The Watercooler is a platform for people from all walks to tell their stories, both true and imagined, in front of a live audience. The storytellers are given a simple brief to share a story, whether based on real-life experiences or entirely fictional.

Inspired by many well-known storytelling events and podcasts held worldwide, such as The Moth or This American Life, organiser Sarah Finnigan-Walsh wanted to bring this event to Auckland to give writers and anecdotists from all backgrounds the chance to share their tales. In 2017 the baton was passed to producers Todd Waters and Alice Kirker, who have evolved The Watercooler into what it is today.

Held at The Basement Theatre studio, the event is a platform for the speakers to demonstrate their skills in the craft of storytelling and exhibit how a simple story can be a fantastic form of entertainment.
